David Mitchell on the burden of proof in climate change. Former US vice-president Al Gore's campaign to broadcast a presentation every hour for 24 hours across 24 time zones, in September 2011, as part of a campaign to convince sceptics of the link between climate change and extreme weather events. The opening question of this video is interesting. There are, indeed, very few credible critics of the idea presented in this question, so when Texas governor and presidential hopeful Rick Perry suggests that "trillions of taxpayer dollars" were being spent on climate research, and that climate scientists were "manipulating" information, it might be worth assessing such claims. Although 4CMR works in the area of climate change mitigation economics and policy, we do engage with climate science colleagues in Cambridge University and through other networks, such as the Tyndall Centre and the IPCC. We hold the view that to understand the science, is crucial to hear from the climate scientists themselves. In this video former Prime Minister Tony Blair presents the 2009 research findings of 4CMR and Cambridge Econometrics from the report Cutting the Cost: The Economic Benefits of Collaborative Climate Action, part of the Breaking the Climate Deadlock series. In this video our Tyndall colleague Professor Kevin Anderson explains the role of the Tyndall Centre and the importance of climate change mitigation research within this research agenda.
Cambridge University colleague, and DECC Science Adviser, Professor David Mackay discusses the energy crisis and illustrates why we need to act now to in order to be energy sustainable by 2050.
